Can We Ask: Where Was God?

Where was God? 

  • When my daughter or son was diagnosed?
  • was hit by that truck?
  • was making such self-destructive choices?

Why didn’t He intervene?

Dr. Welch points you to Job and to Jesus as ones who have suffered. He sets that question, finally, in Heaven. From that perspective, what we experience as waiting for so long, will be seen in our personal history as “in a little while.”

“For in just a very little while, ‘He who is coming will come and will not delay’” (Heb. 10:37). And the emphasis is on “a very little while.” A time is coming when we will tell parts of our stories differently. What is now: “wait,” will someday be: “for the briefest of moments.” What is now suffering will somehow be replaced with glory. (from the Ed Welch blog)

Here is one of my favorite passages of scripture that expresses the same idea:

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.  II Corinthians 4:16-18
