The Sovereign God loves you
/God is sovereign. I love this idea and rest in it. It means I can make mistakes but that He makes sure the end results are still in line with His ultimate plan. I can’t ruin literally everything! It means nothing comes to me that is outside His supervision. Nothing gets past His good will for me. I find that a safe place to be. But I understand that the idea of God’s sovereignty is not “friendly” unless you have an idea of His character. This Sovereign God says He loves you. He proves He loves you in that He took action at great personal cost to solve your (and my) greatest problem – the one we can’t do anything to solve by ourselves. God sent His Son to redeem us out of the deserved penalty for our sin. He protects us from the enemy, who is actively, daily seeking to devour us.
We have an actual enemy who wants to keep us from God’s love. But we have an actual Savior-Redeemer to save us from slavery to that enemy.
See how He loves us:
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son. John 3:16
As Jesus knew the cross was looming ahead of Him, He begged His Father for release from this obligation. But He also submitted Himself to the will of His Father, because of love:
…he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Matthew 26:38-39
We don’t deserve this love and mercy:
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. … But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:6-8
But Jesus knows our weakness and feels our sorrows:
Jesus looked, overwhelmed with compassion. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. John 11:32-33
This is the bottom line, for me:
If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Rom 8:31-32
The God who is sovereign, loves you enough to give up His Son. You, as a bereaved parent, have some sense of how costly that is to the Father. You are loved by the all powerful God of all gods. Peace.
