Finding True Contentment
/How would you define true contentment? In 2 Chronicles 14, we come across the account of King Asa. His reign was different from many of the other kings who came before and after him because He obeyed God fully and received a time of peace in his kingdom. The following observations from Asa’s story remind us that we can have true contentment through Him. True Contentment does not mean . . .
- Doing what is right in our own eyes
- Allowing sin to creep in and take over
- Not encouraging others in their walk with the Lord
- Being complacent while waiting for God to move us
- Never experiencing God’s peace and rest
True Contentment does mean . . .
- Obeying God by doing what is in His eyes (Asa obeyed God by doing what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord – vs. 2)
- Taking action to remove all of the sinful idols from our lives (Asa removed all of the foreign altars, high places, sacred stones and Asherah poles from Judah – vs. 3)
- Encouraging others in their walk with the Lord (Asa commanded Judah to seek the Lord and to obey His laws and commandments – vs. 4)
- Continually being active while waiting for the Lord’s direction (Asa built up the fortified cities of Judah since the land was at peace – vs. 6a)
- Experiencing God’s perfect peace and rest in our lives (Asa was not at war during these times because the Lord gave him rest – vs 6b)
Let us strive to be content as Asa was and agree with Paul when he writes in 1 Timothy 6:6 “But godliness with contentment is great gain.”
