Handi*Camp Summer Staff Opportunities

Why should I consider ministering at Handi*Camp?

Handi*Camp provides a great opportunity to serve the Lord as you serve others -- people with physical, mental or multiple disabilities. You have the opportunity to share your faith in Christ with Handi*Campers and Bible Conference guests. Some campers/guests receive Christ as Savior and Lord and others grow in their faith. There’s also the opportunity to work together as part of a team - to “carry each other’s burdens” (Gal. 6:2). A great by-product of our service and partnership with each other and with Christ is a deeper walk with Him and blessings too numerous to count.

How will I know what to do?

Summer staff members are trained and supervised by full-time Handi*Vangelism Ministries International missionaries and other professionals trained in fields relating to persons with disabilities.

What positions are available?

(NOTE: Detailed job descriptions are available for each of the following positions.)

Service Staff: Individuals, ages 15 and up - primarily responsible for cleaning and assisting in kitchen/dining room as well as helping with other activities as assigned by their supervisor.

Program Staff: Adults, ages 19 and up, fill the following staff positions:

ministries to people with physical and mental disabilities, grieving, mental health issues, elderly, shut-in, abused, battered, broken hearted
  • Assistant Nurses - responsible for general health care of campers and fellow staff members, under the direction of the Handi*Camp Nurse Manager; must be LPN or RN.
  • Bible Teachers - responsible to assist Spiritual Life Coordinator with evening chapel as assigned and to teach a morning Bible class for campers with mental disabilities (this position needed only for the three Challenger sessions; will become Counselor/Companion for other three sessions).
  • Counselors/Companions - directly responsible for the spiritual, social, physical and personal needs of one, two or, at most, three campers or adult Bible Conference guests per camp or conference session.
  • Program Assistant - to assist Program Director in implementing daily program schedules; may also include planning and leading daily recreational activities, games, electives and special events.
  • Waterfront Coordinator - responsible for leading the daily aquatic program; minimum qualification is current Red Cross Lifeguard Training. Current WSI rating is desired.

In addition to their other responsibilities, Support Staff, Bible Teachers and Waterfront Coordinator are assigned to assist Counselors with camper care in cabins.

During the Bible Conference sessions, most staff members will become one-on-one or one-on-two Companions for our conference guests. Some Program Staff will continue their responsibilities depending on programming needs.

What do I do if I'm interested in applying for a summer position?

To qualify for a summer position, each individual must satisfactorily complete the HANDI*CAMP STAFF APPLICATION form and be officially accepted as camp staff members by the Camp Director.

The screening process also includes contacts - made by Handi*Camp - with several personal references that are provided by the applicant as well as an authorized criminal investigative check.

Once accepted, each staff member will receive training materials and related information before arriving and then participate in a five-day staff orientation time just prior to the beginning of Handi*Camp.
